How 1099 Taxes Work in 2026

As a 1099 contractor you pay two separate taxes on your net profit: self-employment tax and income tax.

Self-Employment Tax (15.3%)

SE tax = net profit × 92.35% × 15.3%. The 92.35% factor exists because employees only pay 7.65% FICA (employer pays the other half). As self-employed, you pay both halves. Good news: you can deduct half of SE tax paid from your gross income, reducing your federal income tax.

Federal Income Tax

After subtracting half of SE tax and the standard deduction from your adjusted gross income, your taxable income is taxed at the 2026 bracket rates (10% / 12% / 22% / 24% / 32% / 35% / 37%).

FAQ

1099 tax questions answered

Do I have to file taxes if I made less than $600 on a 1099?
Yes. The $600 threshold only determines whether the payer must send you a 1099 form. You must report all self-employment income to the IRS regardless of amount. If your net SE income exceeds $400, you owe self-employment tax and must file Schedule SE.
What percentage should I set aside for 1099 taxes?
A safe rule of thumb: set aside 25–30% of every payment you receive. This covers SE tax (~15%), federal income tax (~10–15%), and leaves a small buffer. Open a separate savings account and transfer the percentage immediately when paid — do not keep it in your operating account.
Can I deduct my home office as a 1099 contractor?
Yes, using the simplified method: $5 per square foot of your home office, up to 300 sq ft = max $1,500/yr deduction. The regular method (actual expenses proportional to office square footage) can yield more if your home costs are high. The office must be used regularly and exclusively for business.
What is the penalty for not paying quarterly estimated taxes?
The underpayment penalty is currently around 8% annualized (federal short-term rate + 3%). It applies if you owe more than $1,000 at filing and did not pay at least 90% of current year tax or 100% of prior year tax through withholding or estimated payments. The penalty is calculated on each quarter individually.
